Schwalbenfütterung / Feeding of a young Barn Swallow

Sobald die jungen Schwalben aus dem Nest hopsen können sie fliegen. Aber sie haben noch keinen Plan, wie man sich selber etwas zu essen fängt. Deshalb schreien sie die ersten Tage noch lauthals nach den Eltern, die alle Schnäbel voll zu tun haben um ihre sämtlichen Kinder satt zu bekommen. So ein exponiertes Stöchchen in einem Busch ist ideal: das Junge sieht wenn eine erwachsene Schwalbe anfliegt und reißt die Futterluke auf und (falls es eine der eigenen Eltern ist) die erwachsene Schwalbe wirft quasi im Vorbeiflug teils mehrere Insekten auf einmal in den geöffneten Schlund. Dass die Kamera den Moment einfrieren kann ist sehr hilfreich, so eine in-der-Luft-Fütterung dauert inklusive An- und Abflug weniger als eine Sekunde und mit dem Auge kann man kaum erfassen, was genau passiert.

 

As soon as the young swallows hop out of the nest, they can fly. But they have no idea yet how to catch their own food. That's why they spend the first few days screaming at the top of their voices for their parents, who are busy like hell feeding all their children. Such an exposed perch in a bush is ideal: the young swallow sees an adult swallow approaching and tears open the food hole and (if it is one of its own parents) the adult swallow drops several insects at once into the open gullet as it flies past. The fact that the camera can freeze this moment helps a lot, a feeding session like this takes less than a second and you can hardly see exactly what is happening with your eyes.
