Im Gegensatz zu den Wasservögeln, deren Wasserlandung mich oft an die Wasserrutsche im Vergnügungspark erinnert, landet der Reiher geradezu elegant. Er fliegt gegen den Wind ein, stoppt in der richtigen Höhe auf so dass er über dem Wasser nahezu stillsteht und taucht dann über einen großen Zeh mit minimaler Wirkung ein. Keine Spritzer, kein Lärm, keine Wellen. Dass er das so tut ist ja auch sinnvoll, denn je weniger er seine potentielle Beute auf sich aufmerksam macht, desto größer dürfte sein Jagderfolg sein. Fun fact: Wenn er sich in der Wassertiefe verschätzt, platscht es doch... 😋(aber er kann schwimmen).

 

In contrast to water fowel, whose water landings often remind me of the water slide at the amusement park, the heron lands very elegantly. It flies in against the wind, stops at the right height so that it is almost stationary above the water and dives in over a big toe with minimal impact. No splash, no noise, no waves. It makes sense that it does this, because the less it draws the attention of its potential prey, the greater its hunting success is likely to be. Fun fact: if he misjudges the depth of the water it does splash ... 😋(but he can swim though).
