Steinwälzerschwarm an der Nordsee / A flock of Ruddy Turnstones at the North Sea

Steinwälzer gehören zu den Vögeln, die den relativ schmalen Lebensraum der Küste haben. Als Ausgleich zu dieser räumlichen Enge, kann der Lebensraum dafür aber dann hunderte oder gar tausende Kilometer lang sein kann. Da man sich an der Küstenlinie gut orientieren kann, sieht man deshalb dort oft riesige Vogelschwärme an ihrem Habitat entlangfliegen. Das ist immer ein beeindruckendes Schauspiel. Der Vogelzug ist für das menschliche Auge (und den Autofokus jeder Kamera) ein unglaubliches Chaos, das für die Vögel aber problemlos funktioniert. Solche Bilder machen in Briefmarkengröße oder auf dem Smartphone nichts her. Man muss sie im Vollbild auf einem Bildschirm anschauen.

 

Turnstones are among the birds that have the relatively narrow habitat of the coast. To compensate for this spatial limitation, the living space can then be hundreds or even thousands of kilometers long. Since you can easily orientate yourself on the coastline, you can often see huge flocks of birds flying along their habitat. This is always an impressive spectacle, the flight is an incredible chaos to the human eye (and the autofocus of every camera), but it works without any problems for the birds.
