This is the doorway into what remains of the Old Newark Grammar School, Appleton Gate. The school was founded first around the 1200s and re-established in 1529 by the Reverend Thomas Magnus in this location but was moved from there in 1908 to Earp Avenue, later becoming the Magnus Church of England School.
