Teeny-Weeny Street Cleaner!!

Heard the sound of the road sweeper this morning and started to give it a cursory look as nothing new. Amazed to see a very tiny, almost matchbox sized vehicle actually going along the pavement. I had to get out quickly and have a closer look, oh, as well take a few shots of it. The driver, when he noticed my attention stopped, got out and had a long chat with me about his little marvel! It was a Boschung S2 Urban Sweeper and after some research about it, and came up with the following.

It is designed for the urban environment, pavements, parks, pedestrian precincts etc and is ideal for narrow spaces coping with uneven surfaces due to its articulated steering and oscillating suspension. It was easily mounting the pavement from the road and vice-versa. Only 1 .15 m wide, 4.3m long and almost 2m high it can get into tiny spaces especially as its weight is only 2300kg complete with fuel and driver. It can suck up about 3500 to 4000kg of material before full. It can completely turnaround in about 6.5 metres.

This one was a low-emission diesel, only 1968cc and its consumption is just 3.5 litres per hour with an electric version available. This one cost £80,000 but the electric one is considerably more, well over twice that amount!

It’s top speed when travelling between jobs is only 25mph but walking pace when cleaning! It’s an automatic but when at ‘speed’ it does engage another higher gear! The operative has use of a panoramic view cabin that has a transparent floor and doors on either side. There is a touch screen control unit which coupled with the feather-touch one handed steering means the driver is able to handle the sweeper very easily.
