Two Geisha and Porter in Wind and Rain at Night by Kitagawa Utamaro.
Umbrellas and parasols often feature in Japanese Ukiyo-e prints as does rain, wind and snow, with this woodblock print the work of Kitagawa Utamaro in 1801. He lived in Edo, the modern Tokyo being born in 1753 and dying in 1806, producing this in his later life. He is one of the most respected of Ukiyo-e masters.
The print also goes by the alternative title of “Travellers in a rainy night” and comes from Vol 2 of a series called “Ehon Shiki no Hana” or in English “Flowers of the four seasons”. Many of the titles for prints are often very descriptive as in this case although I struggle to see how it fits in with the title of the series as I see no connection with flowers! Utamaro liked to produce work on nature or women so lots of his work featured geisha in various situations!
This is another print from my collection and is one of my favourites.
