The Signal Box, Newark Castle Railway Station.
This is really a tale of two disused signal boxes.
One a non-listed building and therefore not under any preservation orders. This is evidently being allowed to decay and is in a sorry state gradually rotting away thus a precursor to being knocked down. The other a listed building that has been renovated and well maintained and looks marvellous. You can see this lovely signal box via this link.

These two boxes are in towns I have a close relationship with. This sorry one is in Newark which we moved to for our retirement and the other, the heritage preserved one is in Worksop where I was born, grew up in and in which I have very close connections.
It is appalling that Network Rail cannot do anything to prevent the “death” of the box at Newark Castle Station. It is often one of the first features that people see when driving into the town or alighting from a train at the station. If they are leaving by rail to go towards Nottingham, it is probably the last building they see! What memories of Newark that might be!
Newark has many fine and historical buildings, attracting tourists from far afield. Why is this one exhibit of our great industrial heritage and railway past allowed to get into this state, ultimately to be knocked down maybe and lost forever?
