In 1554, due to the intensity of the attacks of the Berber pirates on the entire Spanish Mediterranean coast, King Charles I ordered the council of Cartagena to build on the promontory of a watchtower with the name of Torre de San Antonio. Despite being in good condition, in 1862 the Renaissance tower was demolished and its ashlars were used in the construction of the current lighthouse.
