"Mayflower Incline"

by William Ryback

A remote mine in the Mohave desert. The first ore was developed in 1905 and worked sporadically until 1929. Major development was undertaken in the 30's until closure for WW2. The main shaft is inclined at 37° and is reported to be 700 ft deep. The upper 50 ft of the shaft was in the worst condition. We visited the 50 (caved) and 150 levels. I climbed down (without my camera) to the 260 level which was twice as big and twice as dusty. We made the decision to leave and come back later with respirators.
