Christ Church College, Oxford. The superb fan-vaulting of the Grand Staircase Hall.

At the time of Cardinal Wolsey's fall from favour in 1529, only the Great Hall was fully completed but its approaches were in a state of disarray and the staircase hall remained roofless until this wonderful fan-vault, with it's single central pillar was built in 1636, or thereabouts (there is some confusion over the exact year). It is thought it may be from an original design intended by Wolsey but now lost.

The present staircase itself (out of shot) wasn't built until 1801 and the tower that rises above not until the 1870's.
