Long Compton, Warwickshire, England
The medieval church of St. Peter and St. Paul and the much photographed lych gate.
The original entrance to the churchyard was further west, this 'quasi' lych gate, dated 1600, was originally part of a row of cottages long since demolished, perhaps for the turnpiking of the modern road that runs along side. Whether this remnant was a cart entrance, or the lower story was removed is not known.
The area has alway been relatively remote and known for its historic fear of witches and witchcraft, perhaps stemming from the supposed witch's curse of the nearby pre-historic Rollright Stones which over-look Long Compton and mentions the village in its curse. In the past it has led to murder in Long Compton itself and in nearby Lower Quinton. The former happened in 1875, the latter as late as 1945, though the witchcraft connection in the latter may be early 'tabloid' fake news. Fascinating page in Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Walton_(murder_victim)
