Vanbrugh's early 18th century bridge across Capability Brown's lake. Blenheim Palace. Oxfordshire

The bridge was originally designed to cross the small steep valley of the tiny river Glyme, and was in effect double the height it appears today. Capability Brown later damned the small river and landscaped it's shores, creating the famous lake we see today, and drowning many of the 30 or so rooms in the vast bridge.
