Self Portrait
This piece is an introspective look at myself – and at art in Tanzania in general. The two halves of my face represent the duality of my existence – one half has short hair, and wears a collared shirt, while the other half has longer hair, including a beard, while wearing a local dashiki shirt. The left half represents my more academic side, while the right half, as displayed by the assortment of colors that decorate the face, showcases my more artistic and creative side.
This piece is a reflection of embarking in a creative career in Tanzania. In many homes, a career in art is not encouraged and instead, highly creative individuals go reluctantly into career paths not suited for their creative needs.
