Description: To internalize materials, cells use a process called endocytosis. During endocytosis, extracellular material that binds to the cell surface, such as signaling molecules are internalized into membranous vesicles. These vesicles can then undergo complex intracellular trafficking to reach various destinations. Shown here are epithelial cells in the developing fruit fly wing epithelium undergoing exaggerated endocytosis. The large, dramatic vesicles were artificially induced by transgenic overexpression of a signaling molecule (green) and its receptor (magenta).
