Austin Bats
I’ve been living in Austin a little over 2 years now, but today was my first time watching bats take off the Congress Avenue bridge. It was simply mesmerizing!! If you’ve seen an image of Austin with bats, this is the reason. :)
A little background on the ATX bat cave & bat colony: After a renovation of the bridge in the 1980s, it became an ideal habitat for bats as a cave. This attracted migrating Mexican free-tailed bats to form a colony and the numbers have grown over the years. From March to October, you can see around 1.5 million bats take off from narrow crevices in the underside of the bridge right after sunset. This is the largest urban bat colony in the world!
