A poem written by Persephone Phoenix for Clementine Rosca
When it comes
And it will
In the wake of a call
The quiet night
The morning so cold
That escape from the blanket seems
Impossible—
When it comes on soft feet
With sympathy dripping off its words
Recognize the enemy.
The enemy will speak as if it is your voice
But it isn’t. It is the voice of Maybelline,
Maxim, Donald Fucking Trump, clothing its naked agenda
With emperor’s clothes. Lie:
You aren’t good enough. Lie:
You aren’t pretty enough. Lie:
You need to buy his love with your entire
Self. These enemies visiting you are cowards.
They come lying because you can Feel the beauty of movement in your fingers.
Know the sun falls on you as it does on any flower. Remember
Magazine models are touched up after because even they can
Never
Be perfect enough. The enemy is only fed
By consumption. Starve him.
Throw off the blanket when the sun calls
To kiss you
Because you are beautiful
And the rainbow is enough.
