These predominantly herbivorous birds spend the night on the water and eat during the day, both on the water and on land. Their food consists mainly of grasses, seeds and grain. It has also been observed that they also consume animal food such as the eggs of the common thief (Sterna hirundo), flies (Ephydra hians) and shellfish such as the little nun (Macoma balthica)
The female lays 4 to 8 white eggs, which are incubated for about 30 days
Deze overwegend herbivore vogels overnachten op het water en eten overdag, zowel op het water als op het land. Hun voedsel bestaat voornamelijk uit grassen, zaden en graan. Overigens is waargenomen dat ze ook dierlijk voedsel nuttigen zoals de eieren van de visdief (Sterna hirundo), vliegen (Ephydra hians) en schelpdieren zoals het nonnetje (Macoma balthica)
