Genesis
San Cristóbal Giant-Tortoise (Geochelone chathamensis)
Due to introduced species such as rats, ferral dogs and donkeys the Giant Tortoises on San Cristóbal are basically not able anymore to successfully reproduce in the wild, as the vulnerable eggs and hatchlings are killed off. Since the early 2000nds the species is bread in the Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado.
The individual shown was the first to hatch in the breeding program in April 2005 and is now living under semi-wild conditions. We were very lucky to see "Genesis". Other than most other offspring he will not be released in the wild, but once he is potent will be able to produce offspring with a chance of survival.
