Tropical Parula
The Kings Ranch is a gigantic ranch in South Texas that preserves hundreds of thousands of acres of its habitat. In addition to raising livestock, people may pay to hunt deer and other game. It is also the only place in the US where the Ferruginous Pigmy Owl is known to nest. And the Ranch offers birding tours many months of the year.
I decided I would try my luck at getting a Ferruginous Pigmy Owl, and after doing so, I got shots of several other birds on this giant spread that is bigger than Rhode Island. One of these birds was the Tropical Parula, a bird that can be found in several south Texas spots and in rarity elsewhere along the border.
In winter it migrates to Mexico, Central and South America with some birds traveling as far south as Argentina.
If you ever find yourself in southeast Texas, visit Kings Ranch and take one of its many tours.
