Lucy's Warbler

The Lucy's Warbler is a resident of the US desert Southwest. They can be found in Arizona, southeast California, and the very southwestern corner of Utah where I found this bird and a few of its friends.

I had photographed this species poorly in Arizona a few years ago, so I targeted it again this summer in hopes of doing better. Turns out that my first attempts were a challenge because the Lucy's is a busy feeder in the morning. They don't spend much time chilling out.

Attentive viewers of the shots I post will notice I favor a calm pose that gives the appearance that I happened upon the bird as it was enjoying a few moments of repose. The truth as bird photographers know is that we must fire rapidly at a bird hoping one of the 1/10th of a second shots will give the illusion of repose.

In any burst of shots we will find our birds with silly expressions or positioning themselves in contorted positions simply because they are always moving.

On the morning I was trying to get a shot I liked, these birds were simply doing everything other than chilling out. While I did get a few shots with moderately calm poses, I thought I would post this one because...what the heck is he doing?
