Sir Hectimere
Portrait Of A Superheater - 31019
Southern Region 'E1' class 4-4-0 No. 31019 looks ready for the road at Ashford shed (74A). Unfortunately on this occasion it was never to return to service at Stewarts Lane (73A) its home shed, succumbing instead to the cutter's torch in Ashford Works a short time later. These high flying 4-4-0s were very popular amongst SECR enginemen and were fondly known either as 'superheaters' or 'rebuilds' by them. A little known passenger working, the 07.24 London Bridge - Dover and Ramsgate, ensured the very late survival of Bricklayers Arms members of the class because of the weight restriction, excluding heavier engines, over the metals to Holborn Viaduct where the empty stock for this train was stored each night . Stewarts Lane held on as long as they could to a few superheaters for work on fast van trains over the Faversham road upon which they excelled. No. 31019 is not in bad nick typical of Stewarts Lane although showing signs of high mileage. The emblem on the tender betrays that she has not seen a works paint brush since 1956/7. The photo was taken in 1961.
Camera - Fed II 35mm
