In my part of the world, Europe, for most people who currently live, the probability that they exist is really very small. This is the result of two European based wars. In my case I needed both my parents to survive WWII, and 4 grandparents to survive WWI, not to mention other skirmishes along the way. Given that 3 of those 6 people mentioned above saw active service throughout an entire war, the chances of them surviving was quite low. If it weren't for the failed booby trap, surviving an aeroplane crash, being picked up alive on a battlefield when they were clearing the dead, and coming out of battles where only 20% survived, along with hundreds of other lucky breaks, then I wouldn't exist.
I sometimes feel my life is tough, but this puts it into perspective for me. How lucky I am.
For all that made sacrifices for my generation to prosper, I thank them.
But it doesn't end there, we need to consider whether we need to make sacrifices for future generations to prosper.
What are the biggest threats to our children's children, and how can we reduce the risk and withdraw from the battlefield?
