SE-DBO "Siger Viking"

McDonnell Douglas DC-9-21

47361 / 488

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS)

SE-DBO is taxiing to Riem’s runway 25 for take-off. All SAS’s DC-9-21s were fairly frequently seen at Riem on scheduled flights. Note Oman Royal Flight’s DC-8-73CF A4O-HMQ parked in the Ostpilz area in the background.

Information from flickr - thanks to Chris (Heathrow Junkie):

SE-DBO c/n 47361 'Siger Viking' Douglas DC-9-21 - delivered new to SAS in April 1969. Re-registered as OY-KIC in 1990 and strangely back to SE-DBO the following year!

The aircraft was only retired by SAS in 1995 after an impressive 26 years service! Returned to McDonnell Douglas in the USA, the aircraft then became N127NK with Valujet and then Perris Valley Skydiving, before being finally withdrawn in 2003.

Additional information from flickr - thanks to jbp274:

First flown in April 1969, this DC-9 (serial 47361) was delivered new to SAS Scandinavian Airlines as SE-DBO "Siger Viking." It also briefly used a Danish registration, OY-KIC, while still flying for SAS. The aircraft was leased to Nordic East Airways from August 1991 to June 1992 before leaving the SAS fleet entirely in March 1995. It was then delivered to Spirit Airlines in May 1995, where it gained its current tail number, N127NK. From there it went to ValuJet in December 1995 and Allegiant Air in June 1998 - its current paint scheme is adapted from the early Allegiant livery it carried at that point. Retired by December 2002, it was then converted to carry skydivers, who exit through the a modification of the rear airstair (D.B. Cooper style.)

The sole DC9 in the world used for skydiving was again active in 2024 after being grounded for many years due to lack of spares!

Information on the DC-9 Series 20 from flickr - thanks to Chris (Heathrow Junkie):

The DC-9 Series 20 was designed especially for SAS who required improved short field performance (by using the more powerful engines and improved wings of the Series 30 combined with the shorter fuselage of the Series 10. Ten Series 20 aircraft were produced, all of them the Model 21 - one was unfortunately written off in an accident in 1973 (LN-RLM).
