TC-JAV "Ankara"

McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10

46704/29

Türk Hava Yolları (THY) - Turkish Airlines

Coming in to land on runway 25, THY’s ill-fated TC-JAV was the first DC-10 to visit Riem, on 22 or 23 December 1972 (I have conflicting reports). In the final week of 1972 THY operated daily flights to Riem using their new DC-10s. On 31 December 1972, two DC-10s were simultaneously present at Riem for the first time: THY’s TC-JAU and Laker’s G-AZZC.

This was the second of three McDonnell Douglas DC-10 jetliners ordered by Turkish Airlines. The aircraft was manufactured in February 1972 for All Nippon Airways (first flight 15 February 1972 as N1337U). Since ANA had ordered the Lockheed L-1011 Tristar instead, the aircraft was leased by Turkish Airlines from Mitsui. It was delivered on 10 December 1972. TC-JAV crashed on 3 March 1974 near Ermenonville (France) after an explosive decompression due to an incorrect engagement of the cargo door latching mechanism before take-off. (Source: thy-heritage.com) There were 346 fatalities.
