Outbuildings of the Neues Palais in Potsdam - the Communs
The two small palaces with the two semi-circular staircases on the side facing the New Palace (built between 1766 and 1769) are not actually palaces. They are the "Communs" with a mock palace façade. It had to represent everything!
Baroque on the outside, inside it housed the kitchen and "chambers for the servants", at best rooms for royal cavaliers.
The spirit of times gone by also pervades the northern of the two Communs buildings (right in the picture): It was originally a guest house for visitors to the king, albeit a spartan one:
- two iron bedsteads,
- two ordinary mattresses,
- a bedside chair,
- two stools!
That was all there was for the king's guests around 1799.
Today, the buildings belong to the University of Potsdam.

Die beiden Schlösschen mit den zwei halbrunden Treppen auf der zum Neuen Palais gewandte Seite (1766–1769 erbaut) sind eigentlich keine Schlösser. Es sind die "Communs" mit einer Scheinschlossfassade. Es musste ja alles repräsentieren!
Also außen Barock, innen beherbergte es die Küche und „Kammern für die Dienerschaft“, bestenfalls Räume für königliche Kavaliere.
Das namensgebende "commun" steht also für „gemein".
Der Geist vergangener Zeiten durchweht auch das nördliche der beiden Communs-Gebäude (rechts im Bild): Ursprünglich war es ein Gästehaus für Besucher des Königs, wenn auch ein spartanisches:
- zwei eiserne Bettstellen,
- zwei ordinaire Matratzen,
- ein Nachtstuhl,
- zwei Schemel!
Mehr gab es nicht für des Königs Gäste um 1799.
Heute gehören die Gebäude zur Universität Potsdam.
