Flash + Ambience
I utilized my camera's flash for this photo along with ambient lighting that was available at the time, dim sunlight. I had my subject stand behind one of the large pillars in Red Square (a fairly shady area) and played around with the flash component of my camera. At first, I noticed that the flash was too strong when it was aimed directly at the subject without obstruction. So, I pulled a white card I had in my wallet in an attempt to redirect the flash light so it wouldn't be too overbearing. I placed the card right underneath the flash at a slight angle to obstruct it. Here the flash light acts as the key light while the ambient lighting acts as the fill light. I was able to achieve an effect where the key light and fill light work in harmony with one another to light up the subject. Without the redirection of the key light, the subject would have been insufficiently lit, whereas without the fill light the subject would have been too lit up.
I made sure to keep my aperture wide and focal length short for the shot. This way I could keep the subject perfectly in focus while hazing the background. Since this photo was taken during the day's peak light times, I lowered the highlights in Lightroom to get rid of some overly-exposed areas. This photo is a good fit for the fourth requirement because of the use of flash and ambient lighting. Without the flash, this photo would have been severely, poorly lighted.
