Auto Advance Leaving Southampton
AUTO ADVANCE is a Vehicles Carrier that was built in 2021 and is sailing under the flag of Portugal. Her carrying capacity is 11300 t DWT and her current draught is reported to be 7.9 meters. Her length overall (LOA) is 169.11 meters and her width is 32 meters.
UECC’s (United European Car Carriers) first newbuild dual-fuel LNG battery hybrid PCTC (Pure Car and Truck Carrier) was built and delivered from Jiangnan Shipyard.
The ship is the first in a series of three newbuild pure car and truck carriers (PCTC), measuring 169 by 28 meters with capacity for 3600 vehicles on 10 cargo decks. The remaining two sister vessels were scheduled for delivery in 2022.
LNG battery hybrid technology, together with an optimized hull design for better fuel efficiency, enable these newbuilds to exceed the IMO (International Maritime Organization) requirement to cut carbon intensity by 40% from 2008 levels within 2030. Emissions of carbon dioxide will be reduced by around 25%, SOx and particulate matter by 90% and NOx by 85% from the use of LNG, while the newbuilds will also meet the IMO’s Tier 3 NOx emissions limitations for the North Sea and Baltic Sea.
The technology comes with a price tag of about between $6 to $7 million (in additional cost). Dual-fuel engine technology has now been combined with an energy storage system (ESS), supplied by Finland’s WE Tech, incorporating a battery package from Corvus Energy that is charged by a permanent magnet, directly driven shaft generator or dual-fueled generators. The ESS, provides power to the main switchboard with a DC link for power distribution, enabling peak shaving for the main engine and auxiliaries to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, with a controllable pitch propeller, bulb rudder and dual-fuel boiler also part of the power system.
The construction work on the far shore is Centenary Quay (also known as Woolston Riverside) which is a new development that has commenced in the suburb of Woolston in Southampton. The development is being built on the site of 12.5 ha, which had been home to Vosper Thorneycroft shipbuilders because of its ideal placement on the eastern bank of the River Itchen.
The initial plans were submitted in May 2008 for a mixed residential and commercial development of the quay. There were also plans for a yacht building firm to move in and create 700 new jobs along with 4,320 m2 supermarket. The plans included houses of different types, Crest Nicholson were offering 2,3 or 4 bedroom houses as well as building three large skyscrapers which containing hundreds of flats, a hotel and restaurants. The plans were agreed in August of that year.
