variegated fritillary chrysalis

i wasn't able to capture the jewel-like magnificence of this pupa with the sun gleaming off of the mother-of-pearl like shell, which first caught my eye as it danced about in the breeze

 

so this will have to do

 

the pattern is quite pretty and ornate, which is interesting because the caterpillar and butterfly forms aren't all too spectacular in appearance
