La sottospecie più comune del leopardo: abita infatti tutta l'Africa.
Si tratta di animali molto adattabili, infatti se ne trovano nelle regioni montuose come nelle praterie e nella savana alberata.
I leopardi maschi sono più grandi e più pesanti delle femmine.
Il loro peso varia tra i 24 e i 90 Kg e la lunghezza dei maschi è di 110-160 cm (più 85-100 cm di coda), mentre le femmine sono lunghe 200-225 cm coda compresa.
Gli artigli del leopardo sono retrattili e ricurvi e vengono usati per arrampicarsi sugli alberi e per colpire le prede.
Il leopardo africano ha zampe proporzionalmente corte e robuste, orecchie corte e arrotondate e lunghe vibrisse.
I leopardi hanno lunghe code, utili per tenersi in equilibrio sugli alberi.

The leopard's claws are retractable and curved and are used to climb trees and to strike prey.
The African leopard has proportionally short and robust legs, short and rounded ears and long whiskers.
Leopards have long tails, useful for keeping balance in trees.
