Its original population was mainly composed of Andalusian exiles, both Muslims and Jews, which is why the old part of the city has a very similar appearance to that of Andalusian towns, with small streets with irregular layouts.
Chefchaouen sits on a small valley.
The oldest part of the city grows up the mountain, and at the highest point are the Ras al-Ma springs.
The center of the city is the Uta al-Hamman square, where the fortress and a mosque with an octagonal base tower are located.
The new city was built lower down.
