Queste colonne tronche assieme alla torre di Hassan sono i resti di una moschea rimasta incompleta, nonché uno dei simboli storici più visitati di Rabat.
Comissionata nel 1195, per ordine del califfo Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur, la torre doveva essere il più grande minareto del mondo insieme alla moschea, anch’essa ideata per essere la più grande del mondo, ma nel 1199 i lavori si interruppero a causa della morte del califfo.
Di conseguenza, la torre raggiunse soltanto i 44 metri, ovvero circa la metà dell’altezza prevista di 86 metri e la moschea fu lasciata con solo una piccola parte delle numerose mura e colonne che dovevano essere innalzate.
These truncated columns together with the Hassan Tower are the remains of an incomplete mosque, as well as one of the most visited historical symbols of Rabat.
Commissioned in 1195, by order of the caliph Abu Yusuf Yaqub al-Mansur, the tower was supposed to be the largest minaret in the world together with the mosque, also designed to be the largest in the world, but in 1199 the work was interrupted due to of the death of the caliph.
As a result, the tower only reached 44 metres, or about half of the planned height of 86 metres, and the mosque was left with only a small part of the many walls and columns that needed to be raised.
