Dal 25 ottobre 2019 è vietato scalare il massiccio, come chiedevano gli aborigeni da decenni: sia perché si tratta di un luogo sacro nella loro mitologia del Tempo del Sogno, sia per motivi di sicurezza, visti i periodici incidenti, anche mortali, registrati fra i turisti.
Già nel 1983, il Primo Ministro australiano Bob Hawke aveva promesso che avrebbe vietato la scalata, ma quando il governo restituì la proprietà di Uluṟu agli Anangu (il 26 ottobre 1985), fra le condizioni poste c'era anche che per 99 anni fosse concesso ai turisti di scalare la roccia.
La scalata di Uluṟu era infatti un richiamo molto importante, ma sebbene già nel 1964 fosse stato posizionato un corrimano (poi esteso nel 1976), l'ascesa rimase piuttosto pericolosa per la superficie ripida e scivolosa, per il rischio di insolazioni in alcune ore e stagioni, in generale per la fatica della scalata (circa un'ora e fra le cause principali di decesso c'era l'attacco di cuore).

Since 25 October 2019, it has been forbidden to climb the massif, as the aborigines have been asking for decades: both because it is a sacred place in their Dreamtime mythology, and for safety reasons, given the periodic accidents, including fatal ones, recorded among the tourists.
Already in 1983, Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke had promised that he would ban the climbing, but when the government returned the property of Uluṟu to the Anangu (on 26 October 1985), one of the conditions included was that for 99 years tourists to climb the rock.
The climb to Uluṟu was in fact a very important attraction, but although a handrail had already been positioned in 1964 (then extended in 1976), the ascent remained rather dangerous due to the steep and slippery surface, the risk of sunstroke in some hours and seasons, in general due to the fatigue of the climb (about an hour and among the main causes of death was a heart attack).
