William Wardell, il principale architetto della chiesa, progettò l'edificio in stile gotico. I lavori ebbero inizio nel 1858 e la navata centrale venne completata in dieci anni, mentre il resto della cattedrale è stato realizzato con un ritmo più lento, a causa della depressione economica che aveva funestato la città nel 1891.
La chiesa venne quindi consacrata nel 1897 ancora incompiuta.
Daniel Mannix, nominato arcivescovo nel 1917, diede spinta al completamento dell'edificio e la costruzione della cattedrale fu ufficialmente terminata nel 1939.
Nel 1970 papa Paolo VI è stato il primo papa a visitare la cattedrale e il 20 luglio del 1974 ha concessa alla chiesa il titolo di basilica minore.
Nel 1986 anche papa Giovanni Paolo II ha visitato la cattedrale.
In occasione del centenario della consacrazione, nel 1997 la cattedrale è stata restaurata e ha subito lavori di conservazione.

The main nave of the cathedral.
William Wardell, the church's principal architect, designed the building in the Gothic style. Work began in 1858 and the central nave was completed in ten years, while the rest of the cathedral was built at a slower pace, due to the economic depression that had devastated the city in 1891.
The church was then consecrated in 1897 still unfinished.
Daniel Mannix, appointed archbishop in 1917, pushed for the completion of the building and the construction of the cathedral was officially finished in 1939.
In 1970 Pope Paul VI was the first pope to visit the cathedral and on 20 July 1974 he granted the church the title of minor basilica.
In 1986 Pope John Paul II also visited the cathedral.
On the occasion of the centenary of the consecration, in 1997 the cathedral was restored and underwent conservation work.
