Colonne e altri elementi architettonici d'impronta islamica sono rinvenuti e riutilizzati in tutti gli ambienti.
Il ritorno alla sovranità di matrice cristiana e cattolica avviene con l'avvento dei Normanni grazie al contributo del Gran Conte Ruggero e del fratello Roberto il Guiscardo.
Per celebrare la conquista territoriale dell'isola, la casata degli Altavilla promuove e favorisce la costruzione di splendide e monumentali cattedrali in tutte le località teatro delle battaglie più cruente, riservando a Palermo la costruzione più laboriosa, ma altrettanto fastosa.
La moschea è riadattata rapidamente al culto cristiano, affidata ancora per poco tempo al vescovo Nicodemo di tradizione greco - ortodossa, molto amato dal popolo.
