Large Winter Cache

Continuing on with evening and morning light, we now go to Elk island to see some morning light and colour.

Taken just before 7AM, so the sun had not yet broken over the horizon. This is looking west so there is only a wee bit of colour in the sky. I have included this one not so much for the colour, but for the Beaver's lodge and that huge Winter cache. At least from what I have seen and recall from previous years, caches this year appear to be larger than in the past. Perhaps conditions werejust better. I am not sure. We have been forecasted with a mild winter, so perhaps the Beavers know something that we do not.

Another possiblility is that with water levels being lower than normal in many ponds that there will be less room to get at those branches below the level of the ice.

Anyways, I thought it was interesting how large the caches were.

Finally one bit of information I learned recently about beavers is that they store fat in their tail, so as they use those reserves over the course of Winter their tails will shrink...pretty cool, I thought.
