Blue Jay in Morning Shade
A Blue Jay likes to visit the feeder from time to time, but usually simply sits on the big DIY perch while he chows down. Rarely still and always quite skittish. I believe they are intelligent enough to make me out even with reflections coming off of the window. As soon as they spot me they are gone, so it is a challenge to get them period, and rare to get on without its beak in the food bowl. so to speak.
Here, it is perched on top of the feeder. Since the feeder is mounted on a post, but was designed to hang, there is nothing to keep it from blowing off in the wind. To remedy that I placed a couple of small rocks on top that weigh down the lid, and also help hide a piece of aluminum that holds a branch attached. I really have to find a new branch. It was only an experiment to see if birds would even use it and it can be popular as a waiting station, but it really is not all that attractive.
