Stubble burning

Burning off short stubble prior to sowing a new crop is a common practice in south eastern areas of Australia. Good for clearing the land and getting rid of weeds but not good for the atmosphere (and breathing!) and apparently can destroy soil nutrients. Certainly very very smokey.
