Duelling Venezuela Demonstrations In DC 4
Washington DC, March 16, 2019. Around two thousand folks opposed to US sanctions, interventions and a possible war against the fairly elected (and fairly inept...) Maduro government of Venezuela gathered in Lafayette Park for a rally with speeches. They later marched through the downtown streets and blocked the main intersection in Chinatown for a time. DC Police kept a respectful distance and let them do their thing.
Now why would the US want to interfere in the affairs of another sovereign state? Because naughty Venezuela has billions of gallons of oil and vast deposits of rare minerals in the ground but they refuse to play ball and hand control of them over to US corporate interests. They also like to party with some of the other kids in their neighborhood who are not approved by their Old Uncle Sam.
Around two hundred very spirited anti-Maduro demonstrators gathered on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House.
Thumbs up to the various police who managed to keep both groups safely separated without interfering in the expression of their causes. Thanks also to the few activists who tried with some success to engage the anti-Maduro group in peaceful dialogue.
Another very hopeful observation today is that young people, including many young people of color, seem to be embracing social justice activism in numbers I haven't seen in years . Let's hope that they're in it for the long haul.
