Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis), Southwest of NF 103 on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad (C&TSRR) Track, Rio Arriba County, New Mexico USA

Mid-morning, while waiting for the train to come by at 10,000+ ft (3,050 m), Judy Beard and I were walking around on this high plateau slope looking for birds. This spot is just over the Colorado border into New Mexico and a quarter mile southeast of National Forest Road 103 (NF 103). We could faintly hear birds but it was breezy and chilly. I am surprised by movement in a nearby low scrub to the area around our vehicles… bird for sure, more than one! What is it? Hoping for something exotic or at least out of the ordinary… but alas! No, it’s a brave little Dark-eyed Junco!
