Walking Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo), Isleta Lakes, the Isleta Pueblo, located in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, USA
Winding up a great morning… had “Eagle fever” all morning long… making a last drive around the ponds; there are indeed a lot of birds here.
As we drive slowly... off to the west, on the far side of the Albuquerque Riverside Drain (a canal like structure that parallels the Rio Grande flowing south here, just west of the ponds), six large perhaps female turkeys on top of the ditch bank, walking away from us except one that must have wanted some water bad enough to head down the slope into the drain; gives me enough time to grab the camera and walk in the brush towards the drain… she climbs the drain slope, reappears and walks across the top of the berm (canal bank) but not before looking back at us and giving me a shot… she continues to walk and disappears down the opposite ditch-bank slope into the heavy brush and trees… my recent sacrifices to the Birding Gods appear to be pleasing to them…
