"Arabic bunker"
This Groigne bunker was not only equipped and used by the Belgian troops. A door opening boasts a remarkable, pointed horseshoe arch with Arab inscriptions, which suggests a temporary presence of Arab troops. They formed part of the French army, as colonial subjects, though. This is a unique testimony to the special, international character the Great War had in Flanders. The Arab signs have been deciphered and read: ”There is no greater God than Allah. If you believe in Allah, you will triumph like the victory over Tadmoor and Namar”. The bunker and the back lands have been protected monuments since 2001 and the bunker was restored in 2008.
Deze Groigne bunker werd niet alleen door de Belgische troepen ingericht en gebruikt. Een deuropening herbergt een opmerkelijke, spitse hoefijzerboog met Arabische inscripties, wat wijst op een tijdelijke aanwezigheid van Arabische troepen.
Zij maakten deel uit van het Franse leger, als koloniale onderdanen weliswaar. Dit is een unieke getuigenis van het bijzondere interna-tionale karakter van de “Groote Oorlog” in de Westhoek.
De Arabische tekens zijn ontcijferd: "Er is geen grotere God dan Allah. Als je in Allah gelooft, zal je zegevieren zoals de zege over Tadmoor en Namar".
De bunker en het komgrondenlandschap zijn als monument be-schermd sinds 2001 en in 2008 werd de bunker gerestaureerd.
Ce bunker de Groigne ne fut pas seulement aménagé et utilisé par les troupes belges. Une baie de porte accueille un arc en fer à cheval remarquable avec des inscriptions arabes, ce qui indique une présence temporaire d’hommes de troupes arabes. Ils faisaient partie de l’armée française, en tant que sujets coloniaux sans aucun doute. C’est un témoignage unique du caractère particulièrement international de la « Grande Guerre » dans le Westhoek.
Les caractères arabes ont été déchiffrés: “Il n’y a pas de Dieu plus grand que Allah. Si tu crois en Allah, tu vaincras, comme la victoire sur Tadmoor et Namar”. Le bunker et le paysage de terres alluviales sont protégés comme monument depuis 2001 et le bunker a été restauré en 2008.
