40029 & 40034

Carnforth Monday 2nd May 1983. 40029 has failed on 1F32 18:30 Barrow-in-Furness- Liverpool LS and 40034 is being coupled to take the train, somewhat late, to it's destination. 40029 had earlier put in a lackluster performance on 1P27 15:13 Manchester Victoria – Barrow-in Furness, as was customary for this loco as it was simply, a ‘nag’ and also one of the 'Longsight Ten', ten locos which had their power output derated by about 10%, presumably to reduce wear & tear and ultimately, maintenance (the others being 018, 027,095,097,098, 117, 119, 177 & 180). Fortuitously, 40034 was on hand having worked an Adex to/from Morecambe (from Glasgow), taking over from an electric loco at Carnforth.

While awaiting 40034 to be procured from the stabling point, the guard walked through the train to find if any passengers had onward connections to London. On reaching one lady, and confirming that she was indeed travelling to London, 870xx belted through the station on the 17:10 Glasgow – Euston which 1F32 should have connected into at Preston. When the guard pointed at it and said, “That’s the London” said lady started to complain bitterly with him, with the prize comment being “Why didn't you get out and flag it down”!

And yes, the grinning youth is me.
