Copyright © 2009 - All rights reserved - The beautiful Castle Svyatogo Ioanna Krestitelya was originally built by King Lviv in 1260 and this church was built for his wife, Konstansiya. The church sits in the heart of the original part of the city that was established in 1256 by King Lviv. Today it functions as a museum of the early beginnings of the city. Lviv is a city of great European culture and heritage and one of Ukraine's "Seven Great Wonders." Lviv in Ukrainian, (or Lwow in Polish) means “lion.” The city of Lviv is one of the major historical cities in all of Europe, not only Ukraine. At various times throughout history, it has been part of the countries of Poland, Hungary, Austria, Germany and Russia (Ukraine.) The city’s Coat of Arms is that of King Lviv and bears the standard of the “rampant lion,” a common medieval symbol. People in the city speak fluently Russian, German, Polish and Ukrainian. Signs are in Russian or Ukrainian, German, Polish, and English (lots of international tourists.) Not surprisingly, the predominate native tongue is Ukrainian. Lviv, Ukriane 2009
