Two erecting cranes work in the snow in Building 302, North Unit, 1/2/1918

DESCRIPTION:

Building 302, the North Unit's "Forge" and "Melt Shop" looking northwest, amid the snow of a new year. Two erecting cranes are visible, both of which are emitting steam. Horizontal steel beams can now be seen spanning some of the vertical columns, and peaked ceiling supports are now in evidence.

CONTEXT:

Less than a year after construction began, the North Unit of the Naval Ordnance Plant (referred to as the "projectile plant" in its earliest literature) was complete and had been dubbed operational as of that May. The first ingot of steel was poured from the furnaces of Building 302 on June 8, 1918.
