Glinty Coke Empties
With the setting sun in the distance, KCS 4171 rolls eastward through Houston's West End.
On the drawbar is a long string of empty hoppers returning to the Motiva refinery in Port Arthur for another load of petroleum coke. Pet coke is a byproduct of oil refining (essentially a solid carbon rock with some nasty stuff in it), often sold overseas to be burned for power production. In early 2024, CPKC started running these shuttle trains from Port Arthur to the port of Corpus Christi for export. Additionally, a joint CPKC-BNSF train runs between Port Arthur and the Port of Houston.
