Coke Loads in Houston's West End
With a long train of hopper cars in tow, BNSF 8044 rolls west with one of CPKC's pet coke shuttles on the west side of Houston.
Petroleum coke is a byproduct of oil refining (essentially a solid carbon rock with some nasty stuff in it), often sold overseas to be burned for power production. In early 2024, CPKC started running these shuttle trains from the Motiva oil refinery in Port Arthur to the port of Corpus Christi for export. There's an additional shuttle train to the Port of Houston run via BNSF, so CPKC and BNSF often pool power between these trains.
