Over the Freeway

With a borrowed UP AC4400 up front, a CPKC grain train crosses the long, acute bridge over I-10 on UP's Houston Sub in west Houston. This unique, shallow-slanting bridge crosses the interstate at just a 27 degree angle. It was built when I-10 was bulldozed through the neighborhood in 1968.

This interesting overpass is slated for replacement when TxDOT rebuilds I-10 in this area in the next 5 or so years. Although the new bridge could look similar to the existing one, there's also an intriguing community proposal for a freeway cap, or lid, here. The result would be a deck park over the freeway, leading to a much more pleasant space for the neighborhood and for being trackside.
