CP 655533 - Grain Hopper

For many years, Canadian grain trains consisted primarily of cylindrical grain hoppers provided by the Canadian government and Canadian Wheat Board. This ensured there would be adequate numbers of cars to deliver Canadian grain to market each year.

Those cars however, built between 1970 and 1990, are reaching the end of their lifespan. After the Canadian government passed the Transportation Modernization Act of 2018, which updated the revenue sharing formula for the railroads on Canadian grain shipments, CP and CN have purchased thousands of new hoppers.

CP's acquisitions include the purchase of 5,900 new grain hoppers, built by National Steel Car and Trinity Rail between 2018 and 2022. This particular car is one of the newest, built November 2022 by NSC at their Hamilton, ON facility. Notably, it has its weight limits and capacity listed in both metric and imperial units. And here, it's seen rolling across White Oak Bayou in Houston, TX on an empty CPKC grain train.
