Not the Fan Favorite
While the Big Boy at the other end of the Amtrak depot was getting all the attention, UP 9625 at this end of the station was no less photogenic.
After leaving its diesel helper at Brazos Yard and running to Houston on its own, UP 4014 had a friend waiting for it when the steamer arrived at the Amtrak Station for display. The Big Boy and its support cars were placed at the west end of the station for easier public access, and UP 9625 took the rest of the train to the east end of the station to get it out of the way.
And in the spirit of UP putting on a good face for the public to see, they picked a sparkling rebuild to serve behind the Big Boy for its return to Cheyenne. UP 9625 was rebuilt at the beginning of 2024 as part of UP's Dash 9 rebuild program, and even with its fairly fresh paint it still received a bath to be extra clean for Big Boy service.
