Coke Shuttle at Chaney Jct

With a long trainload of pet coke in tow, KCS 4874 rolls past the old SP searchlight still guarding Chaney Jct in central Houston.

Petroleum coke is a byproduct of oil refining (essentially a solid carbon rock with some nasty stuff in it), often sold overseas to be burned for power production. In early 2024, CPKC started running these shuttle trains from an oil refinery in Port Arthur to the port of Corpus Christi for export. With a little over 300 miles for a one-way trip, the two trainsets in this service can make a roundtrip in just a matter of days.
